Alloy Wheels Maintenance Made Easy

,

The benefits of alloy wheels are well known. They combine strength and lightness while having better heat conduction and looks compared to their steel counterparts. They are quite durable as well. Still, this does not mean that they are completely protected from damage. It is your job as the owner to maintain them in good condition. Find out how to do this.

Things to Do

The main type of maintenance which alloy wheels require is washing. You should wash them on a regular basis, preferably once a month or more often, if needed. For the purpose, you need to use warm soapy water and a sponge. It is best if you use a separate sponge instead of the one which you typically use for washing the other parts of your car. Use gentle circular motion and give the water some time to decompose any build-ups of dirt.

It is possible for you to use a cleaner for washing these car parts. Just make sure that the product is especially designed for these types of wheels. That way, you will have complete peace of mind that it is safe. If there is a bit of rust on some parts, you can try to remove it with lemon juice. If this does not work, you should take your car to a specialist mechanic.

Tar and grease have to be cleaned with specially made removers. If you do not have one at hand, you can use apple cider vinegar. Just keep in mind that it will take a longer time to produce results.

The good-quality alloy wheels have a coat of wax when they are new. Its purpose is to provide better protection from damage. If this wax wears out or gets damaged, they can be waxed again. It is best if this is done by a professional.

Things to Avoid

You must never clean the alloy wheels with an abrasive cleaner as this may cause damage. You must never use steel wool for removing dirt or rust either. Polishing compounds can also cause damage. That is why they have to be avoided.
